A multi-dimensional analysis of the representation of conference interpreters in the Chinese media

Abstract Though interpreters’ professionalism has been discussed in interpreting studies, there have few studies on how the general public see image of interpreters. The present study is a multi-dimensional analysis conference interpreters as represented by media, which based corpus 60 news reports about and Chinese media past 10 years. It explores research question: How are media? Through thematic rhetorical headlines body texts well multimodal photos reports, it found that institutional diplomatic interpreters, who turn “stars” or celebrities profession; they frequently presented along with big events names, portrayed affiliating to power distant from public. Images female beauties among them also selected “consumed” popular culture. This implies discrepancy between self-perception profession their representation media.
